We co-designed a housing model that would create new infill housing units for multigenerational Latino families in East LA.
In partnership with East LA Community Corporation (ELACC), we were selected as one of nine finalists for UnidoUS’s Premio HOME, a national competition designed to elevate and expand innovative approaches to address the affordable housing shortage. Together, we explored Resident-Based Homeownership Models in East LA, focused on homeowners that have or want to construct or buy backyard homes.
This first stage of work identified areas of interest and potential vehicles for new housing options. This work included community engagement, interviews with housing policy experts, and contracted legal research. We held several workshops and fielded two community surveys.
From this, we created a framework for a housing model that would stabilize existing homeowners and create a vehicle for new starter homes.
