BYH Project: 25th

Abutting an existing, historic garage the ADU is a new build, micro 1-bedroom square foot home.

Originally built in 1892 in a Queen Anne-Victorian style, the existing single family home is situated on a block in a historic district of Los Angeles.

Subject to HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zone) review process, the overall character of the ADU playfully references this style while integrating modern colors, forms.

The roofline of the ADU is derived from the historic forms of the main house, while resolving as a folded plane – most visible in the living room and bedroom.

With vivid paint colors and complimentary, saturated floor hues the house has a kaledoscopic interior that expands the perception of the size of the home into something much larger.

Currently housing a Section 8 tenant, this project was completed as part of the Backyard Homes project.
