We created a framework for a sustainable, comprehensive technical assistance program supporting low-density affordable housing development in underserved communities across California.
Throughout California, multiple cities are piloting ADU initiatives to increase housing production. However, many low-income working class communities still do not have access to ADU development opportunities and other emerging forms of low-density affordable housing.
Housing Here! is a new initiative that proposes the development of a framework to inform and implement neighborhood-scale affordable housing initiatives in multiple cities across California. The framework supports two scales of programming: 1) a city-based one-stop-shop technical program composed of local community based organizations, financial lenders, government partners, builders and architects; and 2) a state-wide network of knowledge sharing around policy implementation, permitting, financial lending, construction technology, and education between all Cities.
An equity-centered approach to multi-unit development on single-family lots has the potential to expand affordable housing options for low and moderate income households, increase housing stability for residents, and provide a wealth building opportunity for homeowners and first time-homebuyers.
