We proposed ADU prototypes for cities across Southern California.
With additional REAP funding, we partnered with our non-profit contractor partner Restore Neighborhoods Los Angeles to complete prototypes of ADUs for a Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Subregional Partnership Program ADU Project in the cities of Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Laguna Beach.
We determined the relevant architectural forms and designs to develop for each city through spatial and architectural research, including local architectural forms, styles, materials, and backyard home massing.
Our design approach incorporated factors such as law (how code shapes architecture), economic forces (how development shapes architecture), social dynamics (how people inform space), and environment (what context lends to form).
Following the identification and summarization of local ADU typologies, we proposed five new ADU prototypes for each city, carefully tailored to respond to the unique context and character of each.
